Definition of Khalsa;

ਉਸਦੇ ਪੁਛਣ ਤੇ ਕਿ ਖਾਲਸਾ ਕੀ ਹੈ---- ਬਾਬਾ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਇਹ ਜਵਾਬ ਦਿੱਤਾ;

An introduction to Sikhism;

Sikhism lays stress on the power of prayer and the performance of good deeds. It seeks good and welfare of entire humanity (Sarbat da bahlaa) in it’s daily prayer.

The Sikh religion was founded by Guru Nanak Dev ji who was born in 1469 at  Rai bhoe ki talwandi,  presently known as Nankana Sahib (Pakistan). Guru in Sikh tradition means Enlightner and Sikh means Disciple/obedient. Gur Nanak Dev ji was born in a Hindu Khatri (Business class) family. He reacted against the arid way in which Hinduism and Islam were often practiced. Guru Nanak vitalized them the real meaning of religion, getting rid of hatred and ego. He spread a message of love and universal brotherhood.
He was succeeded by nine human gurus but after the tenth their scriptures became the everlasting great Guru called guru Granth Sahib ji. Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth and last human guru dramatically transformed the Sikh community into a band of Khalsa (meaning-PURE) and constructed a uniqie powerful; chapter in the history of religion. Fighting for justice and freedom of worship, the Sikhs became Saint-Soldiers, a Military power. The aim of Sikhism is to help the seeker of truth to discover within himself the light of perfection, the power of immenance and realize God not only in sublime mystical experiences but in very life and existence of humanity.
The Guru Granth, the Sikh religion’s holy book, contains the divine hymns and musical measures of Guru Nanak and six other human gurus plus other Hindu, Sikh, and Muslim saints from all walks of life spanning five centuries from 12th to 17th and representing all parts of Indian subcontinent. The hymns encompass a wide range of mystical emotions and intimate expressions of the personal realization of God and divine relations and blissful divine love. By it’s contents and composition Guru Granth Sahib can easily be called “GURU OF HUMAN RACE.” The religion taught through Guru Nanak in the form of ten Gurus and now through the Guru Granth Sahib is a practical way of life, leading man straight to his goal. The ten Gurus in their lives, apart from demonstrating the principal of their religion, showed and led the path of ideal life. It is the life of creative love in accordance with the will of God.
Although every Guru had the perfect quality of an ideal person or Prophet, they each demonstrated distinct qualities leading a man to transform into a mystic, a saint soldier.
In his very first sermon, Guru Nanak declared : ‘Na koi Hindu na koi muslman’that’s is in God’s eyes there is neither a Hindu nor a Muslim and by today’s extension, neither Chrishtian, Jew or Sikh but in the way we conduct ourselves.
To put it simply, Sikhs believe that no one religion has a monopoly of the truth and that all religions should be respected. Essential Sikh teachings on the subject of God are contained in Guru Nanak’s composition, the Mool mantra (the basic creed) which is as follows : -
Ik onkar is complete in itself. Any addition or deduction to it is not possible. This is complete and impartial, it can not be divided. (Akhand).
The message of Adwait (Mono-aeisthetic) and total equality within humanity is spread from the presence of Ik-Onkar. The discriminations of Hindu-Muslim, Sikh-Chrishtianity, American-African, Male-female, King-cobbler, Literate-illiterate etc are illusionary only. The light of lord is merged every human being. All humans are equal and have a right to be respected and loved without any discrepancy. Fifth Guru of Sikhs Guru Arjan Dev ji has also preached  this message through, ‘EK PITA EKAS KE HAM BAARIK’  means one father & all of us are his children & TU SANJHA SAHIB BAAP HAMARA,’ means You are the one father of all of us.

All Granths (holy books) from all religions in this world were compiled are not compiled by their founders and do not consist the preaching of the great personalities of other religions or not penned down. It was the first instance that the founders of eternal Guru Granth Sahib ji included the compositions of the saints and hermits of other religions also who had meditated the God or unified with God other than six Gurus of Sikh religion. The compositions of 15 Bhagats (Saints) were included in this Granth. There were Muslim, The higher caste Brahmins, the people from down trodden communities of cobblers, tailors, barber and Weaver were honored.
The message of Guru Granth Sahib ji is for the betterment of whole mankind, they may belong to any nation, community  or religion.
The Guru Granth Sahib ji is eternal and formless Guru. Therefore is above from the sentiments of sorrow-happiness. The honor to Guru thus be given with ordinary Rumalas.  One can not attain the blessing by providing the costly robes, Air conditioning etc but through reciting the hymns and by following it’s preaching.
The basic concept of the Sikh religion…. Starts with ‘IK-ONKAR’ . The IK– resembles ONE of the counting and ONKAR is made of ‘O’ or URA—the first letter of Gurmukhi alphabet which completes IK-ONKAR means God is one.

Ik-onkar satnam karta purakh nirbhao nirvair akal moorat ajuni sai-bhng gur parsaad

In India, a holy person is considered to be ascetic (Renouncer) . This was also the same in Guru nanak’s days. The renouncer, thus had to leave family and friends to seek  God in the forests. The Guru nanak criticized this self attitude of salvation. He taught :

 Be like the lotus flower,
which having it’s roots in muddy waters,
still flowers beautifully above.

Guru Nanak thus advised his Sikhs that they should live in a society and work for its constant improvement and to be always above its meanness and attachments.
Guru nanak gave three fold sermons to his Sikhs :
· Naam Japna : (meditation on holy naam of one God),
· Kirat karma (earn one’s bread by  honest living).
· Wand chakna (sharing one’s earning with the needies).

The formulae of Worship-Work-Charity—to constantly meditate on god, earn by your own effort and share you’re your good fortune with others. Sikhs are constantly reminded that the aim of their life should be service to god, through service his creation. A Sikh should behave nobly, think nobly and act truthfully. Guru nanak gave the importance of truthful living by saying;
Truth is higher but higher still is truthful living.

The sole object of human life according to Guru Nanak, is to rediscover God and re-united with Him not by renouncing world but by living a pious life as a dutiful house holder.

Guru Nanak’s aim was to create an humble but fearless people with their own dignity and ideals, who would be bold saints and good soldiers to fight for truth and justice. He set up a system of succession and in all there were 10 living Gurus. These gurus demonstrated the practicality of Guru Nanak’s teachings in the different circumstances of their own lives. This was not always easy. Two of the Gurus were cruelly martyred for stressing the need for tolerance and freedom of worship. The Sikhs were fortunate enough to get practical training and guidance from Ten Gurus for about 239 years continually.
Contribution of Ten Gurus;

Every Guru contributes a lot to achieve the target which Guru Nanak had set. First Guru Nanak Dev ji taught his followers to remember holy naam, do honest to earn and share your earnings with the needy, the second Guru Angad Dev ji, while rendering service to his master never questioned or dared refuse whatever was said to him to do. Third Guru Amar Das ji despite his old age, he strengthened the Langar, Pangat and Sangat. He wanted the feelings of human brotherhood to prevail in the world. To set a strong precedent, he asked frankly to Mogul emperor Akbar that he could only have his darshan (Glimpse) if the emperor partakes food sitting in the row (Pangat) in the Langar which Akbar happily did and enjoyed.

The fourth Guru Ramdas brought out the significance of love in human life. True service without any selfish motive was the watch-word of fourth master. He thus revised the lesson of Sewa (selfless service), Simran ( Meditation) and sympathetic behavior given by three earlier Gurus.
The fith Guru Arjan Dev ji, provided Sikhs the holy Harmandar (Golden temple) and holy scripture (Adi Granth) He sacrificed his life and faced calmly the inhumane tortures without any gudge and in a way firmed the minds of his followers to face death without a murmur for the cause of justice and righteousness.

The process to transforming a Sikh to a lion hearted Khalsa took a new turn when 6th Guru Hargobind Singh ji sat on the spiritual throne of Guru Nanak. He proclaimed the doctrine of Meeri and Peeri (temporal and spiritual leadership) by supporting two swords, one signifying bhagti (worship) and the other Shakti (power) . He trained his followers in martial arts. He made the people possessing sword but at the same time forbade it’s use in anger or with the feeling of enmity. He encouraged the Sikhs to protect their rights, their freedom and their religion so that they may not be humiliated  or finished by any oppressive force.
With the blessings of the sixth Guru dynamic mysticism of the Sikhs started and which finally achieved the ideal of khalsa during the Guruship of Guru Gobind Singh ji.
Thus Power and Worship became the integral part of the Sikh faith. This new concept later on brought about a revolutionary transformation in the life style of the Indian nation.
Seventh Guru Har Rai ji actually demonstrated in his life what ever he preached to his followers. His precepts therefore straightway did miracle.
Guru Harkrishan, the eighth Guru taught us to serve humanity even by risking his life.He himself served the sick, suffering from fatal epidemic of Plague and Cholera unmindful of the consequences and lost his life when he was only eight years old. His service to the suffering the sick made his Sikhs lover and server of humanity in letter and spirit.
Ninth Guru Teg Bahadar ji, He besides cultivating the humanitarian values and making supreme sacrifice for the sake of others, declared that for a noble living it is quite necessary that one should not frighten anybody, nor should submit to anybody’s fear. He advised his followers to unite with God  by living a noble life and discarding the evils of falsehood, deceit, sham and ego. Guru Teg Bahadar martyred himself for the protection of Hindu religion and set an unparallel example of sacrifice for the cause of righteousness and standing strongly against the oppression of a bigot. That was the only way to eradicate the fear of death from the minds of Hindus and to make them strong enough to be able to protect their faith and lives.
Guru’s only son Gobind Rai (later on renamed as Guru Gobind Singh, when baptized), who was barely nine years old, when occupied the spiritual throne of guru Nanak and he made up his mind to fulfill his mission of raising such a strong nation which could teach a lesson to tyrants and could serve  with utmost devotion and dedication to the poor and suffering class. He had explicitly narrated in his autobiography known as Bachitar Natak that God has installed him to the status of his son and ordained for the creation of Khalsa Panth for the protection of righteousness and destruction of wickedness and cruelty. On the other hand by then the Sikh Guru preceding Guru Gobind Singh ji had already made their Sikhs proficient and steady in judging what to do and what not to do in life, which briefly is as follows :
What the Sikhs should do :
1)-  Every Sikh should worship only one Timeless being– Akal Purakh. For him the teachings of ten Gurus, the baani of Guru Granth Sahib ji  be the savior words. He should regard ten Gurus as one light and one single entity.
2)-  Every Sikh should respect all religions but have deep, unbounded faith in his own religion.
3)-  Every Sikh should learn Punjabi in Gurmukhi script to enjoy the recitation of Guru Granth Sahib Ji or Gurbani in original language and keep himself nearer his culture and heritage.
4)-  Every Sikh should always practice ;

Naam Japna : (meditation on holy naam of one God), Kirat karma (earn one’s bread by  honest living). Wand chakna (sharing one’s earning with the needy).
Honest work and deeds, worship and charity, sharing and caring, selfless service and meditation are the main pillars of Sikh way of life.
A Sikh thus belongs to a race of straight forward persons of action and emotions, sympathy and love, loving truth and truthful living.

What not to do;
1)-  Simple living and high thinking should be his guide words.
2)- Sikh should never steal, beg or gamble.
3)-  Sikh should regard poor man’s mouth as the cash chest (till) of the Guru.
4)-  The Sikh should not differentiate in between his son and daughter and equality be used to rearing them up.
5)-  Every Sikh should always observe the rules of Sikh code of conduct  and conventions from cradle to cremation.
6)- Sikhs are casteless people and they should go to wedlock with union of souls, one soul two bodies. This sanctity makes the marriage.
7)-  The Sikh should not marry a second wife if his first wife is alive. This is against the law of the land also.
8)- The Sikh should never dis-respect hairs, but always keep his/her hairs covered
10)-  The Sikh should not discriminate while doing service to humanity. He should serve all equally without thinking of one’sreligion, caste, color or creed.
Invitations sent : Heads demanded,
Guru Gobind Singh ji sent letters of invitations to his Sikhs living in all parts of India well in advance to participate in the said Baisakhi festival of 1699 on 30th March. He also advised them to come with unshorn hairs. It is estimated that nearly 80,000 devotees came to Anandpur Sahib on call of Guru. Guru ji made the congregation clear that in safeguarding their social, commercial, spiritual and other rights they should not depend only on fate. They should grid u their loins and get ready to face the situations with their own physical force.
In the assembled congregation Guru ji asked for men to come forward  to give their heads to him. He made the request  in a spectacular manner with drawn sword in his hand. No one responded for sometime. Frightened silence spread everywhere. Guru ji gave a second call. Then Dayaram came forward and offered   his head. Guru ji took him inside the tent. This was repeated five times and Guru ji took all of them in the tenet one by one. After sometime Guru ji came out of tent along with these five devotees dressed in new saffron clothes and swords dangling by their sides. Everyone was amused to see them alive. This proved a crucial test of  devotion and obedience of his followers.
Preparation of Nectar :
Guru ji prepared Khande da pahul (Nectar) by reciting Five baanis(hymns) stirring the sweetened water with his Khanda, a two edged sword. The five were given Nectar (Amrit)  and these baptized followers were renamed as singh meaning lions and Khalsa means PURE);
Bhai Daya Singh, Bhai Dharam Singh, Bhai Himmat Singh, Bhai Mohkam Singh, Bhai Sahib Singh ji.
The Guru also begged Amrit from those five pyaras by kneeling before them and thus earned a rare  distinction of being a guru and a disciple at the same time.
Message of Guru to his Khalsa;
“ You are the immortal soldiers of true dharma and the messengers of God. This country’s honor and liberty is entrusted to you by Waheguru. Mix freely with the world, but remain of one soul, one ideal and one aim.”Women shall be equal of men in every walk of life and their names would bear the epithet ‘KAUR’ meaning princess. He who kills his daughter, the Khalsa will snap ties with him. By doing so guru ji also once again added respectability to the women folk. You will keep unshorn hair to look like ancient sages. You will love the weapons of war and become excellent horsemen, marksmen, sportsmen and wielders of swords and spears. Physical prowess will be as sacred to you as spiritual sensitiveness. You are friend of all but enemy to none except the oppression. You would serve the poor without distinction of Caste, Creed, religion or region and would protect them with Deg (community food) and The ( physical strength). You will call yourself as Singh i.e. lions and greet each other with the salutation Waheguru ji ka khalsa waheguru ji ki fateh  meansKhalsa belongs to god Victory be to God.
Five freedoms ;
According to the Guru a person who is baptized completely cut off from his social past in which he had been living before being baptized.. Such a person enjoys five freedoms;
1)-  The total freedom from the tenets of his previous religion i.e. Dharam nash,
2)- He becomes free from his earlier deeds i.e. Karam Nash,
3)-  He snaps his ties of his caste, race, clan, or heritage i.e. Kul nash,———now onwards, his father is Guru Gobind Singh, mother of khalsa is Sahib kaur and his place of birth is Anandpur Sahib.
4)-  He is absolutely free from taboos, customs and rituals in which he was engrossed before baptism i.e. Bharam Nash,
5)-  Finally he is free from all vocational distinctions i.e. Sharam Nash—-He developes this notion that his liberation is possible during his life by serving humanity and meditating on naam i.e. God’s name. he becomes saint and soldier simultaneously when he joins Khalsa brotherhood.
Govt. informed ;
The report of whole story of the inaguration of khalsa was sent to Aurangzeb in Delhi by his spy Abu-ullah Turrani who sent his last report in detail and warned  him that never dare to challenge the live God, earn no sins, if you do not follow my suggestion,  your kingdom and  your family shall be no more. After he sent his last report and resigned, he too requested Guru ji to bless him with nectar and  then he embraced Sikhism.
Four transgressions;

Guru ji finally proclaimed a code of discipline for his newly created Khalsa in which stress was laid on;
1)- No smoking in any form,
2)- Not to eat ‘KUTHA’ meat slaughtered and prepared as per Mogul ritual,
3)- Not to cut hairs from any part of the body,
4)- Not to have sexual relationship other than with your spouse. (Restricted this to both men and women).

Five Kakaars;

The members of newly created khalsa brotherhood were instructed to wear five Kakaars (symbols starting with letter—K).
1)- Kesh or Hair.
2)- Kangha or Comb.
3)-  Kirpan or Sword,
4)-  Karaa or Iron bracelet.
5)- Kachehra or Knee long underwear. (Short breech)

Mission of Guru Gobind Singh ji;

He clearly states his mission in his own words as follows;
“The divine Lord sent me for righteousness sake. On this account I have come into the world to extend the faith everywhere and to seize and destroy the evil and sinful. Understand this you holymen, I assumed birth for the purpose of spreading the faith, saving the saints and extirpating all tyrants.”
The Khalsa is exactly like me
I ever abide in the Khalsa !!
 The Khalsa is my body and soul
The Khalsa is the life of my life. !!    (Sarabloh Granth, Page 667)

Khalsa in nutshell;

The Khalsa remained an ideal figure because of his noble acts, supreme sacrifices, intrepid deeds, laudable character, enviable discipline, unmatched strength, emulative determination, unshattered self will, prodigious behavior, straight forward dealings, unbounded loyalty, sympathetic attitude, cosmopolitan outlook, generous life-style, devotional living and proud heritage.
My sincere thanks to Dr. Sarup Singh ji Alag, from Alag Sabad Yug for their beautifully explained books on Creation of khalsa, it’s valor and excellence which inspired me to write as a blog and share the Sikh masses all around the world. This will also help those who are unaware of the superb qualities of Khalsa. I have learnt a lot from them.
